Living Intentionally: A Love Letter to Yourself
Transparent Moment…
Back in 2022, I was transitioning out of a challenging time that lasted nearly a year. I finally quieted my mind—at least enough to learn and develop the habit of doing things for myself. In short, I began to live life with intent. I romanticized my life as much—and as simply—as I could. And honestly, it was much simpler than I expected.
After realizing I had become disconnected from myself, I knew I needed to slow my thoughts down and make choices rooted in self-love, with no one else’s influence. Two major things changed: (1) as a social butterfly, I had to learn how to be independent socially, and (2) the way I started and ended my days completely shifted. Both were mentally and physically challenging. It made me realize that, in some ways, I’m a “person who doesn’t like change.”
Anyway, the main thing is that change did happen—once I made the decision to live intentionally. The change was well deserved and good. What if you decided today to live intentionally? Well, there’s no right or wrong way to do it, but here’s this…
What Does Being Intentional Mean?
No complicated talk. Living intentionally is making conscious choices instead of operating on autopilot. Make choices based on your ethics, emotional state—all while being aware. Choose what feels right for your mind, body, and your soul. And do that everyday.
Showing up 15 minutes early, for example, is a way of being intentional. You’ve already shown the employer how dedicated and hungry you are for the position! Next thing you know, you’ve received your acceptance letter! An even better one: we all know that there’s two ways you can record a TikTok of performing a viral dance. DO IT FULL OUT, OR SIT DOWN!
Why Living Intentionally Matters
Although we each walk our own path, you’ll begin to notice changes like mental clarity, deeper personal connections, and a beautiful boost in personal growth.
Did I mention that I’m a social butterfly? Girl, was it a time where I had to learn to go to the gym on my own! It was the most uncomfortable thing ever for me. This was the point in my life where I had to force myself to “just do it.” Not realizing that breaking this barrier would also help my mentality. I began to LOVE the gym so much that I would go almost everyday—no matter what! The gym was a place where I began to sprout through the soil. Sad and mellow days became those “Alexa, play ‘You Got It’ by Vedo” days! Bonus points for me…I began to look and feel like that gworl more and more each day.
How to Live Intentionally?
No rocket science. Just think about your typical day. What parts do you feel need some improvement? What parts are okay, but would be bomb if you were to bump it up a notch? Here are a few ideas:
Morning Rituals: Create a daily intention to practice as soon as you wake up like drinking lemon ginger tea or stretching.
Mindful Decision-Making: Think for a moment before making important decisions. Think about the pros and cons of both sides. It can save you from wasting precious time or even regretting it.
Create Your Space: Find solace in your space by surrounding yourself with things that nourishes your energy. Plants bring color, life, and oxygen to my apartment. They truly bring me peace and happiness.
Digital Detox: Whether it’s for 30 minutes or an entire day, take a break from social media and leisure communication (texts/calls). Replace that time with doing something for yourself.
Give Your Body Some TLC: Treat your body with care. Try a quality body oil after a nice bath. Maybe get a bit fancy and add some essential oils for therapeutic benefits!
If you think about it…self-care is beyond a checklist. It’s an intentional act! I’m a true believer that if you are not being intentional about applying your serums and creams, then you may as well just get straight to the sunscreen.
BEAUTies, please remember that intentionality is a practice, not a one-and-done task. Slow down, be kind to yourself, and take time to find what satisfies you. It takes time as well as trial and error.
What’s a small thing you can do to live more intentionally today?
